Tourism tops our economic impact at $5.4 billion. Our military which includes the Space & Warfare Systems Center, Charleston Air Force Base, Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center creates a $3.5 billion impact. Not included is the U. S. Coast Guard Base, Cutters and the new U. S. Coast Guard Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center established in 2004. Rounding out the top three is the Port of Charleston with a $3.3 billion impact. We are seeing steady population growth and a solid job market increase. Army Wifes The cast for the popular series "Army Wives" is set to resume production in North Charleston after the three month writer's strike. GenPhar Inc: a Mount Pleasant based biotechnology firm recently embarked on a major $33 million expansion and relocation of it's headquarters to Innovation Park at Oakland Plantation. The company will expand it's work force from 20 to more than 140 high skilled employees earning $40 per hour average. DuPont has decided to expand operations at its Bushy Park site in Berkeley County to make Kevlar fiber for use in body armor. The operation requires a $500 million investment and will create 100 jobs. Pegasus Steel has invested $10.5 million to refurbish and set up operations in the former Jomar Logistics building on Crowfield Plantation. Pegasus uses high-tech machinery to cut and shape steel plates. The South Africa based company was attracted in part by Charleston's fast growing military vehicle industry. Google in Berkeley County! GOOGLE Inc. the Mountain View, California based internet company announced they are searching and filling jobs for the new processing center being built in Berkeley County near Goose Creek SC. The 520 acre Mount Holly property is currently under construction. The deal will bring a $600 million investment and up to 200 plus jobs. The company has launched a new jobs web site and recommends applicants check back in frequently for new postings. Welcome Google! Google Jobs Cabela's the outdoor outfitter giant is considering placing one of it's outdoor Meccas in North Charleston SC. Vought Aircraft Industries recently completed the first Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliner aircraft fuselage section in its new manufacturing and assembling plant. The plant is located on 387-acre site near the International Airport in North Charleston SC. DaimlerChrysler AG has invested $35 million in an existing 460,000 square-foot plant in the Ladson area of North Charleston. This is the first of three potential expansions for the automaker. AAI Engineering Support Inc. purchased the former Corning Inc. plant located in Goose Creek for $5 million dollars. The Hunt Valley, MD based AAI plans 300 local employees to the plant in Crowfield Corporate Center on Crowfield Plantation. They design and build maintenance-training devices associated with the USAF C-17 cargo jet. Cummins Turbo Technologies opened a $13 million plant that adds 180 new jobs to the local payroll. The new 110,000 SF plant is located in the Palmetto Commerce Park in North Charleston near Goose Creek and Summerville. SKF USA Inc. invested $12.5 million in it's MRC Bearings operation in North Charleston. They will add about 100 jobs over the next few years. Shimano American Corporation completed construction of their new 102,000 square foot distribution center in Palmetto Commerce Park in North Charleston close to the bedroom communities Goose Creek and Summerville. USMC a new $7 million dollar 30,000 square-foot Marine Corps Reserves Training Center is planned for the Charleston Naval Weapons Station in Hanahan. It will replace the current center at the Naval Annex. A Dubai company has aquired a large tract of land in Orangeburg County to build a massive warehouse and transportation hub that could generate 8-10,000 jobs and require a $600 million to $800 million investment.
